About Gestalt . . . Making sense of it allThe German word Gestalt is not easily translated into a single English term. It embraces such a variety of concepts: the shape, the pattern, the whole form, and the configuration. It connotes the structural entity, which is both different from, and much more than the sum of its parts.Loosely translated it means ?the whole picture? and one of the main purposes of counselling is to get a picture or sense of you as a whole.In other words, overall, what are you about? What is the whole picture of you? This requires a lot of thinking and a lot of feeling and a lot of guidance from the counsellor.Together we look for the essential patterns of your existence, the main themes of your life, exploring their origins in childhood (or later), their present expression and ways in which they can be modified.
